No points in the rematch

In a rematch from Horgen’s first game of the season, the Dolphins met against EHC Siebnen on Sunday night. Horgen faced off in their home whites hoping to get revenge for their loss after the first meeting.

The five minutes of the first period reached a high tempo of speed fast as both full benches changed quickly. Each whistle came with a new line from each team. During the play, both teams made their changes on the fly.

The combination of a fresh player from the Siebnen bench being involved in a well timed transition play through neutral found the Siebnen wing entering Horgen’s zone with speed. The Siebnen player took a stride and a glider closer to the goal and the puck was in the net for their first goal. (Horgen 0 – Siebnen 1).

Horgen threatened many times in the Siebnen end. But the puck always seemed to bounce away from the home team’s stick. Horgen made good plays but only found the goalie’s glove or other pads while the rebounds were cleared. The pace of the game slowed as the Dolphins either regrouped in their own zone or set up in Siebnen’s end for the ‘icing’ face off. Both those situations took too much time off the clock. The first period ended in last minute rushes from each team. (Horgen 0 – Siebnen 1).

Being down one goal in the game did not deter the Dolphins from coming back to the ice with a fierce focus. Horgen took advantage of having seen Siebnen’s game already for four periods. They stepped up the attack on offense by fore-checking, passing and shooting. But their shots continued to stay out of the net. Defensively, they closed down passing lanes and plugged the neutral zone. But Siebnen pushed back hard and scored another goal to make it 2-0. More shots by the Dolphins and more saves by the Siebnen goaltender. The period ended Siebnen 2 – Horgen 0.

In the third period a much welcomed point was put on the board for Horgen by team captain Marco Burkhardt. Positioned in front of the net for a tip-in a rebound or a quick shot from a pass, Burkhardt’s stick found the puck as it bounced towards him from behind the net. The goalie had seen it go past on the other side which left an opening for the quick shot to hit the back of the net. The goal cut the lead in half. (Horgen 1 – Siebnen 2).

With the game so close, each team stepped up the aggressive play. But from aggressive play come penalties and this period had it share. EHC Siebnen were successful in not only killing their own penalties, but also capitalizing on a 4-5 disadvantage. They got behind the Horgen defense and scored a shorthanded goal to retain the 2 goal lead (Horgen 1 - Siebnen 3). With both teams back to even strength; Timo Sykora fed Maurice ‘Mo’ Thornton from the Horgen blue line. Thornton raced up the left boards. When he reached the offensive blue and saw the line of red jersey-ed defenders, he ripped a snap-shot that went through the traffic and past the goalie. Not only had ‘Mo’ the sniper struck to put the game back to within one, it was his first goal since joining the Dolphins this season. (Horgen 2 - Siebnen 3).

With a new MO-mentum, Horgen pressured and fought for the tying goal. With four minutes on the clock EHC Siebnen again made their lead two and that is where it stayed despite all the scoring attempts by the Dolphins.
Final – Horgen 2 – Siebnen 4
