Horgen returns to winning
The Horgen Dolphins played their matinee match this Sunday against HC Condors in Zug. The Dolphins came out with a determination to get on the board first. In the early part of the first they controlled the majority of the action. Solid breakout passes helped Horgen make the transition into offence smoothly. In the offensive zone the Dolphins moved the puck fast and shot often. They were quick to back-check and first in the corners. Halfway through first period a Condor got a lucky bounce and picked off a clearing attempt in between the circles, he shot and scored. It was just a few minutes later when Horgen pushed through the Condor defense and had the tying goal. Marc Weber found the puck on his stick during a scramble in front and instinctively put it away to even the score. Neither team broke the tie before the period ended.
(HC Condors: 1 – Horgen Dolphins: 1)
The beginning of the second period kept the Dolphins defense busy. They turned away the Condors many times and turned up ice for the counter-attack. Horgen’s quick shots and quick shifts brought the game into a fast pace. After taking the puck deep into the Condor zone, Maurice Throrton dished it out from the corner boards. In the face off circle Kevin Ostroske caught the pass and slung a shot to the net. It deflected off a Condor defender and the odd-angle-ricochet ended up in the back of the net. It was right after that go-ahead goal when the game got more physical. Penalties for both sides were repeatedly given. Horgen’s power play unit took many shots but never capitalized. On the penalty kill they were well organized and allowed little room for their opponents to establish control. The period ended with Horgen holding on by the slightest margin.
HC Condors: 1 – Horgen Dolphins: 2)
Each team picked up their attack in the third. Early on, Horgen had numerous opportunities that came up empty. Their defense continued to find open outlet passes after controlling several Condors’ attempts. A clearing pass trough neutral ice found a Horgen winger open and the play developed into a three-on-two. The first shot went wide and Horgen fought for the rebound behind the net. It came out to Adrian ‘Adi’ Vollenweider waiting at the edge of the crease. His one-touch shot put the Dolphins up by two. The aggravated Condors came back but Horgen kept cool. Keeper Max Schneble saw each shot coming and either smothered it or turned it over to be controlled by his defenders. Midway in the third, Marco Burkhardt gained the Condor’s blue line pushed past two defenders then wristed a shot over the goalie’s blocker to put the home team up by three. The Condors’ frustrations increased and they were called for more penalties. The visitors tried desperately to get a shorthanded goal. Horgen played with composure hardly allowing the Condors possession until the final whistle blew. Final (EC Condors:1 – Horgen Dolphins: 4)
The Dolphins next two games are back-to-back away games. On Saturday morning November 30th at 9:00 the Dolphins skate against SC Kloten Flames in Kloten. On Sunday, December 1st at 10:00 the Dolphins will visit Die Toten Hosen in Dolder. They return to Zug on December 8th to play HC Dragons at 2:30.
